As A Patient, What Can I Expect Regarding Medical Treatment?

Regarding Diabetic and Peripheral vascular disease wound/ulcers:
Both conditions have decreased blood flow to the area of the wound/ulcer and will take longer to heal. A 94 year old and a 72 year old male diabetic both took 8 weeks to do some healing and form enough granulation tissue (new blood vessels) in the wound to do skin grafts to the wound area. This is a general progress and cannot be taken as a promise or guarantee.

    CASE HISTORY:
Peripheral Vascular Disease Non-healing skin ulcer (wound) healed with Medical Acupuncture:

PRIOR HISTORY (Submitted by patient). AGE: 94 ~ SEX: Female
Patient is a 94 year old retired school teacher. She had a large skin ulcer (wound) on the top of her foot. The wound measured 4.5 cm long by 4 cm wide, with redness (skin discoloration) that extended 2 inches beyond the perimeter (outside edge) of the wound..
ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT HISTORY (recorded by Dr. Swing):

    Acupuncture Treatment #1 (04-17-97):

During her first acupuncture treatment, the patient's wound became moist. Of equal importance, the area of redness around the outside of the wound decreased in size by 1 inch (50%).

Subsequent Acupuncture Treatment History (4-18 through 5-13-97):

Since the first treatment, the patient received 8 additional treatments over a period of 13 days. Much granulation tissue has formed and is beginning to cover the tendon. The wound has decreased in size, measuring only 1.6 inches by 1 inch wide (4 cm long by 2.5 cm wide). The patient went to surgery on 5/13/97 to remove the tendon and then will require several more weeks of acupuncture before skin grafting.

      DISCUSSION:
The acupuncture treatments stimulated the healing process by dilating the blood vessel in the area of the wound, allowing increased delivery of oxygen and body nutrients to the wound. Based on other wounds of similar size,I believe the acupuncture treatment will decrease the normal healing time by 67%.
